Top 5 – Sci-Fi Movies

There are a lot of good Sci-Fi movies. The following ones are my favorites (in no particular order) – as always highly subjective. This list does not include anything Star Trek or Star Wars – which might be covered in a separate list some day.

  • Children of Men (2006)
It stars Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine. In 2027 humans have become infertile. Most countries have collapsed and millions of refugees have entered the UK (that has become a police state) seeking asylum.
Theo Faron (Clive Owen) a disgruntled burocrat ends up trying to help a young  pregnant refugee flee the UK.
  • Blade Runner (1982)
A true classic. Based on the novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ by Philip K. Dick, Blade Runner depicts a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019. Genetically engineered organic robots called replicants are not allowed on earth.
If they defy the ban and return to Earth, they are hunted down by police special operatives known as ‘blade runners’. The movie focuses on a brutal group of recently escaped replicants and the burnt out expert blade runner, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment to hunt them down.
  • The Fifth Element (1997)
Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) must help the Fifth Element, recreate in the form of a human woman named “Leeloo” (Milla Jovovich) to save the universe from the “Great Evil” that appears every 5.000 years.
The Fifth Element does not take itself seriously and is a visually and acoustically stunning film.
  • GATTACA (1997)
In the future the lives of humans are complete predifined by their DNA. To fulfil his childhood dream to become an astronaut the protagonis of the film (played by Ethan Hawke) must cheat DNA tests and swap blood, hair, tissue, and urine samples to pass screenings. When shortly before his scheduled flight security is tightened due to a murder, this becomes more and more difficult.
  • Contact (1997)
Based on a Story written by Carl Sagan, in this movie Jodie Foster plays a SETI scientist who first discovers an alien contact message. The message contains thousands of pages of technical drawings that allow the construction of a complex machine, believed to let one human travel to the aliens.
